Discovering and experiencing “how things are” rather than “what they are” continues to inspire and drive Fugate’s art and art instruction. Welcome to a sketchbook course that leads you from representational sketches to a world of pure abstraction.īarbara Fugate is a painter committed to making drawings and paintings that express life rather than imitate it. Some collage will be incorporated into your class work, as well. Mixed media (including watercolor, gouache, artist crayons, charcoal or conté crayon) will be used in sketchbooks. Additionally, abstract paintings by artists including Kandinsky, Klee, Miro, and Georgia O’Keeffe will be discussed as you learn about compositional balance, spatial concepts, and the expressive power of color and line. In the first sessions you will abstract from something seen and by the end of the five-week course you’ll create pure abstract compositions. In this Expressive Sketchbook class, you will discover the language of abstract shapes, both geometric and biomorphic, while progressing the degrees of abstraction with each session. Unleash your imagination as you explore the world of abstraction in this five-week course.Ībstract art uses imagined shapes, colors, and lines to translate experiences felt and observed. Medium: Mixed media, gouache, opaque watercolor, compressed charcoal and conte crayon Level: Some drawing experience recommended
